Style Series: How to Wear Layering Necklaces
Layering necklaces are trending again, but are they ever not? It's a classic look that has been making waves for generations. We love layering because it lets us really express our personalities and mix-and-match our favorite pieces. Here are our top tips for how to layer necklaces.
1. LAYER BY LENGTH
Choosing different lengths will give you a cascading effect which makes each piece stand out. If you have a few favorites that are the same length, you can always add chain extenders. Start with a piece that falls close to the neck, and build your look from there. Half the fun of layering is juxtaposing contrasting styles: a super cute choker and a pendant-drop gemstone. And don't ignore your options for choosing chains with different weights and textures: bead, cable, box, snake, and more.

2. MAY THE ODDS BE IN YOUR FAVOR
There's no shortage of opinions on what constitutes the "correct" number of necklaces to wear. Many people follow the "rule of three," while some insist it doesn't matter so long as it's an odd number. In our many layering experiments, we've found that combinations of three or five pieces are often the most pleasing, but ultimately the relationship between shapes, styles and chain lengths is important when deciding what works best for you.
3. CONSIDER YOUR NECKLINE
Think of the cut of your top as a frame for your necklaces. The neckline of your shirt and your style of jewelry should work together, not compete. And if you're wearing a high neckline, consider how the pattern or color of your clothing relates to your jewelry choices. Your clothing and your jewelry should work in unison rather than against eachother.
4. PLAY WITH CONTRASTING METALS
Once it was considered "faux pas" to combine jewelry with contrasting metal colors, but that's no longer a hard and fast rule. Some of the best looks come from pairing different styles, with variations in weight, metal, color, stones, and texture. Your neck is a blank canvas so mix and match as you see fit.

5. BREAK ALL THE RULES
And of course, you can promptly forget all of our advice. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to layering necklaces. And the few that do exist are just begging to be broken.
