What Does Made In Canada Actually Mean?

What Does Made In Canada Actually Mean?

When you hold a piece of jewelry in your hand, it's easy to see the finished result.

The polished silver. The tiny details. The symbolism woven into every line and texture.

What you don't always see is the journey that came before.

Every LanaBetty piece begins as an idea.

Sometimes it's inspired by a conversation with a customer. Sometimes it's a symbol that keeps appearing in my life. Sometimes it's a feeling, a mantra, or a reminder I need to hear myself.

The first step is always a sketch.

Not every drawing is beautiful. Many begin as quick pencil marks, notes scribbled in the margins of a page, or rough concepts exploring shape, symbolism, and meaning. These early sketches are where a piece begins to find its story.

Once a design feels right, it moves into the digital stage. Using CAD software, I transform the sketch into a three dimensional model, refining proportions, adding details, and ensuring every element can be brought to life in metal.

From there, the design is 3D printed in Canada and prepared for casting.

The casting process transforms the model into precious metal, creating the foundation of the finished piece. It's one of my favourite stages because it feels a little like magic. An idea that existed only on paper suddenly becomes something you can hold in your hand.

When the castings arrive back at the studio, the bench work begins.

Each piece is cleaned, refined, assembled, soldered, polished, oxidized, and finished by hand. This is where the character of the piece emerges. Small details are sharpened. Surfaces are softened. Tiny adjustments are made to ensure the finished jewelry feels beautiful to wear.

Finally, chains are attached, stones are set when needed, and every piece is carefully inspected before being packaged and sent on its way.

Although LanaBetty begins at my bench in Vancouver, every piece is supported by a community of skilled Canadian makers and craftspeople. From printing and casting to photography, production and packaging, each design passes through many hands before reaching yours.

In a world of mass production, I believe there is value in knowing where things come from.

There is value in craftsmanship.

There is value in creating slowly.

Most of all, there is value in objects that carry meaning.

What begins as a sketch eventually becomes a talisman. A reminder. A marker of a moment in time. A symbol of who you are becoming.

Thank you for being part of that journey.
