DESCRIPTION
The world is upside down and instead of making jewelry, here we are at home, sewing three layer cotton masks for those in need. The need is so great, we just can't make enough, so we made this DIY Mask Pattern for you to download. If you can sew or want to learn to sew, this is a great project to help your loved ones and your community.
Masks are recommended by the CDC, BC CDC, and Health Canada. Read more about it here. Making your own mask helps to keep N95 masks in the hands of first responders and nurses in hospitals who need them most.
To add a third layer, repeat the pattern and simply sew two layers together as if it were one. Easy as pie!
IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
A mask does not prevent you from contracting Covid-19. It is a tool you can use to help prevent the spread if you are an asymptomatic carrier. Masks are tricky to wear if you aren't used to them. Practice at home first. Masks are only useful while they are dry. Regular breathing causes condensation to build up and the cotton becomes damp - it is no longer effective at that point. Only wear a mask when necessary (in confined spaces, like the bus, or in high risk areas like the grocery store or pharmacy). Those are the only places you should be going! You should otherwise stay at home. You do not need to wear a mask to walk down the street, alone, 6ft apart from everyone else.
Pro tip if you find your skin is agitated by the mask - wear extra moisturizer! The condensation from breathing actually dries your skin and extra moisturizer will help lock your moisture in and prevent the dreaded "mask-acne".
Prints on a standard 8.5" x 11" letter paper from home.
