Posted by 1 on

As a part of the new Follow Friday series, LanaBetty is very excited to present artists, businesses, and a variety of talented makers and share you, the reader, a little insight into why we all do the things we do. What inspires us, what drives us, and a few tid-bits of advice from the business owners themselves. Do you know of an awesome business?! Is your business totally radical awesome? LanaBetty is always looking for fun and exciting businesses to blog about. Complete this form for consideration. Kate Duncan Designs – Owned and operated in Vancouver, BC by the beautiful and all talented Kate Duncan. I met Kate at Make It Show in spring 2012 and thought her products were bomb-diggity. Kate makes incredible products that, after years watching my father craft wooden masterpieces, I truly appreciate and admire. With wood construction, while the final product has to look clean and sophisticated, it is often the internal construction (joinery) and the steps taken to care for and prepare the wood that really contribute to the final look, design, and overall tone. Seriously. Wood is so tactile. Kate takes her time, creates a beautiful product, and her attention to detail is remarkable.

Kate Duncan - DarkWhat do you make/sell/service do you provide? I make high quality housewares and furniture using high quality hardwoods. I am also available for design and construction of custom made furniture. I launched a line of cutting boards and serving trays in February 2013 and a bathroom collection including a vanity, mirror and series of towel bards is set to launch June 2013. And that's not all; 5 pieces set of furniture including a bed, night stand, dining table, credenza and bench are set to launch in September 2013.

What inspires you? I draw inspiration from clean lines and traditional joinery. I begin each and every piece with the intention to make it last more than a lifetime, not only in construction, but also design. By keeping lines clean and design free from clutter my pieces will outlast fads and furniture trends for decades. Utilizing solid traditional joinery including dovetails and mortis / tenon joints my pieces will withstand years of wear and tear. Kate Duncan - LightWhen and why did you start Kate Duncan Designs? I started my company back in 2010. I felt that I had outgrown woodworking as a hobby and was moving towards having a stronger expertise in the trade. I needed clients to keep me motivated and keep me on my woodworking toes. Having clients continue to push the limits of my experience is what motivates me to continue learning new skills and techniques.

Any words of wisdom to share? Measure twice, cut once. Seriously.
