Learning to Felt

Posted by 1 on

A few weeks ago, Andrea and Robert asked me if I would donate a miniature display of jewelry to advertise Got Craft? (May 6, click here for more information). The event was the Mini Maker Faire, at the Museum of Vancouver (MOV). Intrigued by the idea of this event, I brought my Fiance along and we went on an adventure. It was my first time at MOV; goodness it is beautiful! Inside was what I could fairly (unfairly?) sum up as a craft show for boys. Realistically, the event is for "Makers" of every shape, size, and gender, but there is definitely a lot more hand-made electronics than hand-made fabric. There were a lot of hand-crafted creations ranging from bicycle optical tube lighting to hand-carved musical instruments. My fiance (of Glitch 3D Models) was very enthusiastic, giving out business cards, discussing 3D printing and he's even begun a collaboration with several of the people he met to participate in the full-fledged Maker Faire at the PNE on June 23rd & 24th. While we were were browsing the tables, networking and interacting with each Maker's made-project (btw, was super cool), we came across this beautiful felt egg. The wonderful ladies from Plush had brought a big blank canvas of a felted-easter egg for brave souls to try their hand at felting. I was immediately smitten! I even won the silent auction for the felting class! And since then, I have been felting at every opportunity!! See below for my first try felting a cupcake pincushion. Which brings me to this weeks inspiration for the #WednesdayTreasury. This week is all about felting. There are kits, cute animals and adorable food. This one artist (F for Felt) goes above and beyond and makes incredible life-like re-creations of our favorite characters - see her Etsy Shop. Felting is easy to learn, difficult to master and for a beginner like myself, super fun. Just try to look where you're poking because the barbed needle in your finger is very painful! Past Treasuries can be found here and treasuries featuring LanaBetty can be found here. Check back each week as there will be a new inspired treasury; I'd love to hear your suggestions on a theme, topic, holiday, or color! Hours after beginning and thousands of pokes later, you are welcomed with a warm sense of accomplishment for your troubles. I love felting!
