For me, it did. They are a community of creative entrepreneurs who are united by their (and my) love of handmade goodness and supporting small (and local) business. They do twitter chats and workshops and do their very best to inspire! As a weekly subscriber to oh my handmade; I was particularly moved by a post written by Isa Maria, titled "4 ways to put more heart into your business".
- Truth: think critically about yourself and your product. Be honest about it. It is fine and dandy to make mistakes, but admit it, learn from it, move on. For example if your shipping policy is to ship on Mondays and you forget. Don't get caught in a lie (hello, your shipments are date-stamped), but be honest. Contact your buyer and let them know there was a delay.
- Authenticity: we are all unique snowflakes. Embrace who you are and use it to make your business stand apart from the rest.
- Speak to your audience: Isa makes a very good point here; speaking in a voice/language that is outside your normal realm can only spell disaster. Speaking from the heart in the language you speak (and your readers can identify with) will be more thoughtful and committed.
- Transparency: being open and honest on the big wide internet can leave one feeling mighty exposed. It's scary. What if someone reads it? What if a coworker reads it? It's ok. It is who you are! Embrace it! To show that you and your business exist and that you are a real human being goes leaps and bounds in winning over potential customers. I would rather buy from a woman who proclaims herself as a mom of 2 than a faceless, nameless internet entity.
