With the holidays around the corner, its ok to put the tree up, ya? we have been busy busy BUSY in the studio preparing what will become the stocking stuffers and centrepiece gifts for loved ones across the nation and in Metro Vancouver. We thought a lot about how we were going to approach the holiday season this year in regards to holiday markets and decided this was the year to branch out. We applied to the biggest and best markets in Vancouver where artists were carefully chosen and thoughtfully selected. We wanted to be part of the best. Go big or go home! We started with IDS West, which was hugely successful and while we are seriously considering an application to Circle Craft next year, it was just too big for us this year. We wanted to be part of tight-knit groups of artists and show organizers and did our research. You wouldn't believe the joy and excitement one experiences when that acceptance email comes in. We were lucky enough (or worked our butts off and they noticed) to be considered part of the team for this year's Refresh Market. They even featured us on their blog!
LanaBetty will be at Refresh Market on November 21. Mark your calendars and come say hello![/caption] It's held in Squamish, which is totally outside our usual zone for markets, which was one of our biggest goals. We have so far had a great experience with their team (Shannon and Rachel) and took a few minutes to chat about the market and why it matters to them.
What is your business about? Refresh Market is one of BC's largest indie marketplaces for handmade, vintage and curated wares - and Squamish's biggest shopping days of the year. We host two markets, a spring and winter market, at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park CN Roundhouse which offers 22,000 square feet of raw, open space with tons of natural light. Last spring, we gave birth to Refresh Kids, the miniature version of Refresh Market which has the same look and feel of our "grown-up" market but with a focus on the modern mother and child.
What inspires you? You! We are always inspired by the creativity of our vendors. The magic that happens when you all come together is the reason why Refresh Market has grown into such a local staple. We're also inspired by our community who regularly mark their calendars in anticipation of what we're hosting. It motivates and challenges us to continue to raise the bar each time.
When and why did you start your company? Refresh was really the answer to what we felt was missing here in Squamish. We both have a background in event production and management as well as a really good eye, so we put our heads together and came up with this. I'd like to say we planned for everything to happen this way, but we really didn't. It was a "feel good" holiday event that promoted the idea of shopping locally and supporting indie makers. Eight markets later, we've more than quadrupled in size and we're certainly on the radar in terms of markets and craft fairs. Plus, we get to provide a venue to support creatives like you, and that makes us happy.
The market is a collaboration between Shannon Lorenz Garibaldi Events + Design and her partner Rachel Boguski. Together, we offer more than 20 years of combined event marketing and production experience along with a love of quality goods and the desire to create what we felt was missing in our community: a really, really great day of shopping.
Any words of wisdom to share? Don't be afraid to go big. You're never going to feel "ready" or "sure" or whatever feeling you think you're "supposed to have" prior to launching - you just have to go with what feels right because chances are, it is.
