Follow Friday: Firefly Notes

Posted by 1 on

As a part of the new Follow Friday series, LanaBetty is very excited to present artists, businesses, and a variety of talented makers and share you, the reader, a little insight into why we all do the things we do. What inspires us, what drives us, and a few tid-bits of advice from the business owners themselves. Do you know of an awesome business?! Is your business totally radical awesome? LanaBetty is always looking for fun and exciting businesses to blog about. Complete this form for consideration. Firefly Notes, owned and operated by Sandy in Vancouver, BC is super cool for so many reasons. One reason is her amazing vintage-inspired products! Read her interview below! Note: Firefly Notes will be at Portobello West Market this weekend, March 23rd & 24th. (Event Information)

What is it you and your business do? I make gifts and greetings that are inspired by the past. Some of my items include magnets, tins, altered matchboxes, prints, tee towels, scrabble pins, and various vintage coin cufflinks and pins.....oh and tags and greeting cards too! It's a little bit of everything! What inspires you? My inspiration comes for an inherent love of the past. I love objects and images from long ago and relish tales from the past. There is nothing better then a period film for me and I look forward to hearing genuine tales from older relatives about how things used to be. This fascination has always been with me. Also oddities always hold fascination for me.

When and why did you start your company?
I started my company after I had my first son (I have tw0 children) in 2008. Though I have aways been a creative person, I had never sold any of my work before. I needed to stay at home and be with him and Firefly Notes not only helped me stay sane, it also started rolling in some extra cash flow. Win/Win!
Any words of wisdom to share?
My words of wisdom would have to be to encourage people to take the risk in opening their own business. If there is something that makes you feel good then go for it. For handmade and vintage sellers, Etsy offers a low risk way for you to open a shop from home and test the waters. You may be surprised to find that you too are a creative entrepreneur at heart!
Go for it!
