Do you ever wake up, stumble to the washroom to prep for work, only to realize you’re carrying bags under your eyes bigger than the allowable carry-on specifications? I do, all the time. Thankfully there are many products on the market that claim to hide bags, blemishes and other less fun skin irritations. But how do you choose? The best, but not the most cost effective method I use, is the “buy it and see” method. To help save you a little cash and to let you in on my humble opinion, I have pit two leading brands against each other. You can decide for yourself. As a side note, keep in mind that the opinions expressed here in are mine and mine alone. I have purchased all products and use them (or don’t use them) on a regular basis. If anyone is interested in contributing products for review; I would be happy to take your suggestions or products. Send me an email.
Best if you Want to: Save money and look good doing it.
How it Works: “Whether you need to conceal a little or a lot, this conditioning concealer with AquaCurrent Science and botanicals like ginseng, vitamin E, and chamomile will help your skin look smooth. Dermatologically tested formula glides on easily to help cover dark circles and other imperfections.”
Does it Last: I would judge this concealer to be moderately water-proof. If you hit the pool with it on, it isn’t going to run off, leaving you looking like a streaky mess, but will wipe off when you wipe your eyes. Nobody cares what you look like at the pool anyways, they’re too self-conscious of themselves to sit there judging you.
Bottom Line: Basically, while sometimes it’s nice to have the more expensive item, this time just isn’t it. The cost is so drastically different that it really is the only choice. I for one don’t mind re-applying my concealer here and there and the wear-ability is long enough to not worry for a night out. The product isn’t matte, but it isn’t glossy either. It has no offending scents and my only complaint is that sometimes the tube can twist ‘up’ in my pocket and squish all the way at the top. Really; this stuff is your best bet for covering up nasty skin issues and making your bags look smaller. If you want to utterly destroy those bags; check out Clinique’s All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage.
Best if you Want to: Give your eyes extra protection (35SPF) while spending a lot of money on a quality product.
How it Works: “A lightweight, creamy, discreetly opaque concealer. Provides a smooth, long-wearing invisible coverage for all skin blemishes. Water-resistant, fragrance-free and non-acnegenic. This emollient-based, lightweight concealer is so concentrated that a tiny amount can provide opaque coverage of the skin’s imperfections and discolourations. It effectively covers dark circles, blemishes, moles, tattoos and birthmarks. Enriched with antioxidants (derivatives of Vitamin A and Vitamin E), it also contains Silica to help adsorb the skin’s oils. Concealer has an SPF of 35 and is available in a wide range of colors.”
Does it Last: I would put this concealer on my top-favorites list for last-ability. It definitely lasts. Over night parties, forays into the wilderness all weekend, as long as you keep your dirty mitts off your eyes, you’ll be good for a while. Unfortunately the price is a shocker. How can you justify that kind of price for such a tiny product when for $6.00 you can simply pack your concealer stick in your pocket and re-apply once a day?
Bottom Line: Ultimately; the price is the big bad wolf of this product. I like the fact that it has 35SPF, my face cream, eye liner, mascara, you name it probably also has SPF in it too. It is not a requirement that my concealer be SPF too. If you want to use this product, I would recommend you walk into any MAC shop and ask for a sample. In Vancouver, you could do this at every shop in a short period of time and have well over a year’s supply. Better yet, head to Sephora. They give out samples like it’s going out of style and they’ll tell you to have a great day and come back soon.
I enjoyed posting/comparing the products in my cupboard and look forward to posting more! Feel free to comment. Which face washes do you use? Do you have a morning and night wash like me? Pros/Cons?
